Cardiovascular Fitness: New Evidence for the Prevention of Mental Health Disorders

There is a medical disorder that affects 17.3 million adults in the United States each year. A disorder that could increase a person’s risk for coronary heart disease by 64 percent…

We’re talking about depression. Depression is one of the most common health issues in America. It can take away a person’s drive, make them feel useless, and even strip them of their will to live. It is a serious condition that needs to be addressed and treated. If you believe you are suffering from depression and/or anxiety, see a medical professional as soon as possible. So many cases of depression go undiagnosed because people chalk off their symptoms as “just a phase.” But depression doesn’t just affect the mood. It affects the body in alarming ways, as well.

Fortunately, there are many treatment options for depression, such as talk therapy, CBT, antidepressant medications, and ketamine infusions.

However, researchers are now turning their focus slightly away from treatment options and looking towards preventative measures. One of the concepts widely accepted by society is that physical fitness helps to combat the symptoms of depression. Factors such as lifestyle, diet, and exercise all contribute to a person’s overall mental health. Aaron Kandola, a researcher from the University College of London, believes that this is where the key lies to curbing the increasing numbers of depression cases.

Kandola and his team of researchers recently performed a meta-analysis of cardiovascular fitness and its relationship with mental health risk. To do this, they searched for participants who met their standards, found four who met their requirements, and dove right in. The results confirmed the idea that exercise is linked to depression, but in a more specified manner. Kandola revealed to Medical News Today that, “incremental increases in the cardiorespiratory fitness group were associated with proportional decreases in associated risk of new-onset common mental health disorders.

In simpler terms, the more cardiovascular activity you take part in, the less likely you are to develop a mental health disorder like depression.

We are hoping that this information and evidence will draw more attention to the studies behind preventative measures for prominent mental health issues like depression and anxiety. If you are saying to yourself, “I am already one suffering and nothing seems to work,” then we suggest you consider ketamine infusions.
